As one of the first integrated steel plant in Arabian gulf, Qatar Steel has always been at the helm of all affairs in last 3 decades. For the year 2018-2019, Qatar Steel received the Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Excellence Award from the World Steel Association in recognition of the Company’s performance to ongoing commitment to preservation of HSE in the plant. Consolidating the motto ‘building the future’ and strengthening Quality Management System, Qatar Steel has been accredited with an exclusive recognition on technical competence of having testing laboratory in a bid to realize the motto of building the future by TURKAK (Turkish Accreditation Institution, Turkey), for Chemical and Mechanical testing of carbon steel used for reinforcement of concrete in Qatar and worldwide. TURKAK is a signatory to the European co-operation for Accreditation and International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC).
Steel is an important component of Qatar’s long-term social, human, and environmental development contributing positively to the sustainable development in the country.
Formed in 1974 as the first integrated steel plant in the Arabian Gulf, Qatar Steel went on to be wholly owned by Industries Qatar in 2003. Widely recognized as the foremost leader in the steel industry, the company specializes in the manufacturing of DRI/HBI (Direct Reduction Iron/ Hot Briquetted Iron), Steel Billets, high yield steel re-enforcement bars ranging in sizes from 10mm to 40mm in diameter along with high quality steel wire rod and rebar in coil. It also operates a UAE based subsidiary – Qatar Steel Company FZE in Jebel Ali Free Zone.
Over the past decade, Qatar Steel has transformed itself into a growth – oriented business entity. Since 2003, the company has gone in for many expansions, further increasing capacities across production facilities. The subsidiary unit in Jebel Ali FZE operates two primary facilities at its 60,000 Sq. meter site. The first includes the state-of-art wire rod mill that has an installed capacity of 240,000 mtpa and the advanced rebar mill from VAI–POMINI is installed with a capacity of 300,000 mtpa.
Qatar Steel has successfully forged a remarkable reputation by establishing unrivalled quality and reliability in all the products and service offerings. Central to this achievement has been the drive to exceed customers’ expectations. The company has complied with the international requirements of BS 4449:2005 Grade B 500B for manufacturing of transverse rib pattern (herringbone pattern) re-bars. In 2008, it celebrated the 30th anniversary of its commercial production and was listed by MEED as one of the top four steel producers in the Middle East. In 2013, Qatar Steel celebrated its 35th anniversary jointly along with Annual Trader’s Gathering.
Quality and sustainability along with health, safety and environment has together been the essence of Qatar Steel. The company aspires to be the first name in the region’s steel industry contributing proactively towards reducing toxic emissions from the plant, protecting the environment, and thus making the steel process more eco-friendly. With a DRI based production process, Qatar Steel makes use of the cleanest raw materials for steel production. The company has a well-established safety management system in place and is an applicant to avail ISO 18001 certification in addition to several other prestigious certifications.
In 2006, Qatar Steel received CARES Sustainable Reinforcing Steel certificate, which highlighted the integration of sustainability into company’s organizational strategy and operations. The company adheres to the new globally accepted ISO 14001:2004 environmental standards. Also, its deformed steel bars have been accredited by Dubai Central Laboratory Department (DCLD) of Dubai Municipality for conforming to standard specifications of BS 4449:1997 Grade 460B and BS 4449:2005 Grade B500B. It is also authorized to affix DCL conformity Mark on the product. Furthermore, Qatar Steel complies with the requirements of BS EN ISO 9001:2008 relevant CARES quality and operations assessment schedule.
In 2019, Qatar Steel is the first steel company as on date has achieved a performance rating of “VERY GOOD” for the prestigious BES 6001 Responsible Sourcing Certification from CARES UK after the successful reassessment audit conducted along with CARES SCS Scheme Surveillance Audit.
Qatar Steel becomes the first rebar manufacturer in the region that obtains the Certificate of Product Performance from Australasian Certification Authority for Reinforcing and Structural steels (ACRS), which will enable Qatar Steel to Market its product in Australia and New Zealand.
As a sustainable producer of steel, Qatar Steel is committed to sustainability management and its reporting as it is an integral part of the company’s corporate strategy. Our sustainability approach and framework identify the key focus areas for improving our sustainability performance while taking into consideration our stakeholder’s priorities and engagement. It is aligned to the Qatar Energy & Industry Sector Sustainability (QEISS) program, the National Development Strategy 20112016- and Qatar National Vision 2030.
Hall of fame
The company was inducted into Palladium’s BSC Hall of Fame for strategy execution in October 2012, international accreditations for excellence in Strategy Management Process. It was the first company in Qatar and the first steel company in the region to receive this award and it stands testimony to the company’s robust strategy management system with effective use of BSC.
Qatar Steel has evolved into an encompassing culture of social responsibility that not only sustains, but, enriches the lives of the communities it supports. Qatar Steel invests in various capacities aiming on society, culture, health, sports and environment developments. Guided by a community investment program, the company holds blood donation drives, donation to Qatar Charity and extends financial support to the Qatar society for the rehabilitation of people with special needs. Awarded for innovation in Waste Recycles
Qatar Steel was honored as winner in the category of innovative waste recycle / waste management practices in sustainability reporting. The award was presented by H.E Dr. Mohammed Bin Saleh Al-Sada – Minister of Energy & Industry. Qatar Steel also received its first award as 1st runners up in 2011 sustainability reporting. Qatar Steel is working to reduce its environmental impact by investing in cutting-edge technology and continuous improvements in efficiency in an effort to extend support Qatar Steel’s promise of making steel matter.
